Abandoned Pets: Brandie and Bruna

October 24, 2012

Got a new friend. A brown street dog I call Brandie. (It was Brownie initially as I thought it was a he). She was abandoned by the construction workers who raised her. Been seeing her for about a month, looking for food scraps and drinking from a pool of rainwater on the streets.

One evening I gave her dinner scraps in the place where she makes her bed. (It is surprising how she makes her bed on the sandy soil making sure that it would be as smooth as possible free from pebbles and stones). She looked at me as if saying, "Thanks." I did the same the following day.

The next day on my way to work, she followed me to the corner of the main road until I disappeared from her sight at the village gate/guard house.
That evening, she saw me walking home from a distance and running excitedly, she welcomed me. She walked by me towards my house. I gave her food and water. She would eat while wagging her short tail as I call her name. This has been our routine in the past 2 weeks.

Sigh. We are a family of asthmatics. I couldn't adopt her.

Someone should help Brandie soon as she is pregnant. If the guys from the Munisipyo get hold of her, she may not be lucky. She's a good dog, just hoping to have an owner again. I don't have a car to bring her to PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society) in Loyola Heights, Quezon City. :(

PS: Brandie has a cat friend whom I call Bruna (Why Bruna?  I'll explain it one of these days.) who would wait for Brandie for her turn on the food bowl. If it was empty, she would meow infront of my gate asking for food. Bruna lost her kittens a few weeks ago and I heard her crying around the block looking for her lost babies. She didn't find them. Both animals wear collars which means they were pre-owned and then abandoned.

[P.S. I checked the PAWS FB this afternoon. They are already full and could not take in new abandoned/abused pets. I actually got a text this evening from a friend who could send someone to my village to bring B and B to PAWS but was disappointed when I told of him of the current PAWS situation.]

Here are some of the replies:

Engel G:  Ampunin mo na idol. Maluwag naman yung space inside the gate.

Walang mag-aalaga during the day.
October 24 at 4:28pm

Mimi P: OMG, kaw pala un... how are you Neo? Adopt mo na, Neo .. malapit na Christmas...
October 24 at 4:31pm

Jocelyn BRM:  Bait naman ni sir!
October 24 at 4:36pm

Neo: Di talaga pwede eh, Mims. Kaya she needs to be adopted or sent to PAWS soon. I heard may mga villagers na nagrereklamo about stray dogs. Meron pa kasing iba, aside from Brandie.
October 24 at 4:37pm

October 24 at 4:40pm

Jocelyn BRM:

Di nman ako sinusumpong ng asthma bcoz of them.

Neo: Tina, we had the a lot of dogs during my childhood. When I was in grade 5, I helped the matriarch dog in her first puppy birth. The firstborn was "suhe" or breach birth. Had I not intervened and helped her to push it out, the mom and other 5 puppies would have died. The firstborn died. Mom's maternal instincts tried to revive him to no avail.

Same situation 5 years ago with a street cat frequenting our Alabang house for food scraps. Breach delivery for her first kitten. I helped her. The kitty died. Second kitty grew up to be the adopted pet which my sis called Bruno (who looks exactly like Bruna, hence the name). Bruno has been given away due to Nanay's condition.

Lorenzo T:  Neo.. Mahal ka na ni brandie at bruna... You gave them love and care even with your little time... :)
October 24 at 5:59pm

Engel G: ayan nag salita ng si master Lorenzo! its now yours. ikaw na ang amo!
October 24 at 6:05pm

Neo:  Lorenzo: They either love me or just there for the food. :D Pero di talaga pwede eh, because of Nanay's condition. :(
October 25 at 12:23am

Robert E: Sir panoorin mo yung movie na Hachi... Then tell me if you still want to give Brandie away.
October 24 at 8:20pm

Neo : Oo naman. Kakaiyak yun. May mga nagtext nga sakin kanina. Ako daw si Richard Gere. :D

Main reason I could not adopt Brandie and Bruna: My 75yo Nanay was hospitalized twice in 2 weeks due to asthma last September. Her condition was nearing status astmaticus and was not responding to medications. In fact, after my bro's wedding, we rushed her to the hospital. Nanay spent about a month in my house upon discharge. The house and the village setting helped her in her fast recovery. Her doctor and the family advise that she stays in my house at least one weekend in a month. That would mean no pets inside the premises. :(

Neo:
It was raining when I entered my village this evening. Brandie saw me about 7 houses away and rushed excitedly. Due to rains, I let her eat in my garage the food scraps I bought home from my office lunch. I went up to the back balcony and checked my laundry. She tried to follow and she was nervous and checking each concrete step. But got scared and climbed down upon reaching the fifth step. Seems like it was her first time climbing up a stairs. Bruna was nowhere in sight.

Vivian DO: wawa naman...baka makita pa ng ibang walang kaluluwa, gawin pa yang pulutan...
October 25 at 12:33am

Neo: Onga, Mami Vivs. Yung last na nahuli pa naman na may about a hundred dogs na dadalin sa Baguio and nearby provinces ay taga Cavite rin. Pero malayo sa village ko.
October 25 at 2:06am

Neo: PAWS already replied to my message: "If you can find a fosterer, we can extend free vet checkup and treatment for the dog and cat. We cannot admit the them into the shelter as the shelter is full and we do not allow overcrowding or breach quarantine protocol so as not to jeopardize the health, general welfare and care of the current shelter animals. Please refer to our Rehoming Assistance: http://pawsphilippines.weebly.com/admission-policy-and-rehoming-assistance-policy.html Kindly email philpaws@yahoo.com CC: pawsphinquiries@gmail.com and banes_74@yahoo.com for future correspondence."

Neo: Brandie was not in her usual "bed" when I passed by this morning. I found her sleeping on a corner house that could block the strong winds and rain from typhoon Ofel. She even used a trash empty cement bag as bed to shield her from the cold ground. She felt my presence and woke up, and "greeted" me. She was still looking at me when I turned at the corner.... My officemate had a birthday celeb today. I would be bringing home the food scraps to Brandie (and Bruna) tonight. She'd be very happy.
